Every moment of life is golden moment, there is nothing like dull- or a sorrow moment , as every cloud has a silver line.

Wise men is those who is not keeping then selves idling or just pull on the time of life, but those who built a wind mill during the wind and get the power from it.

If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it.
Happy are those who dream dreams and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.

Philately as Hobby

Philately as Hobby

What is Philately? Philately can be described as the collecting and arranging of postal material i.e. postage stamps, postal routes, letters, covers and other material. This collection, be it stamps; covers etc. are usually documented to trace major historical events and other events of the respective country.

Philately is not only to collect the Stamps. Though it is very much associated with it, it is wider and unfolds the activities of postal communication of particular country and its culture. In the age of inter net service the present generation may not be aware what was the contribution of it in the service of mankind. In our country even today highest number of post offices is functioning with sizable postal workers.

The word "philately" is said to have been coined in France in 1864 by Georges Herpin. It is from two Greek words: "philos" meaning loving and "ateleia" meaning free of payment.

Yes, philately was more confined to the study of labels, representing payment for postal services. Its area was widened to include the study of the systematic collection of postage stamps, postcards, postal covers, postmarks and other postal material.

There is main difference between philatelist and stamp collector is that, philatelist does not necessarily collect stamps but he has desire to know why the particular stamp was issued, where as collector wants the price should have embossed for his collection.

Indian Postal History :-

It is not out of place to state here that, India is very much advance in the field of communication in ancient compare to any part of this universe .The element of Art or Beauty was very much evident in most forms of communication through primitive drawings and heliographic character can be seen in caves and in most of ancient temples every part of the country. Here messages were written on leaves and stones. Another most effective and emotive method of communication was through Music, Good, Bed or Daunting news was conveyed instantly across the hills and villages through traditional musical instruments.

We have various references in ‘Rig-Veda’ of a dog ‘Sarama’ being used to carry message. The ‘Atharvaveda’ records couriers and names them ‘Palagala’. There were also many examples of traditional emissaries conveying messages in an unconventional manner.

In ‘Ramayan’ Hanuman, was sent by Lord Ram to covey his messag, to Sita who was kept hostage in Lanka, and in ‘Mahabharata’, King Drupad dispatched the message to King Dhritirashtra to give away half the kingdom to Pndava, through the Royal Priest. One of the earliest known evidence of a systematic postal service using foot messengers is found during the reign of Chandragupta Maurya (321-297 B.C.). A courier service between the capital and the outlying provinces of the vast kingdom served the needs of intelligence gathering and collection of revenue data, whence regular “Doots”, (Massager) and pigeons were used for conveying the royal communiqué. Even today and believe it or not still it is being officially used by government departments in remote areas even to day.

However developments of mail systems in India were influenced then after by the Persians, Greeks, Arabs and later, the Mongols. During 1154-1226 , Chenhizkhan the great Mouhul King was the pioneer in the postal communication. And subsequent Emperor Ashoka also devised a very efficient means of communication that helped him create a vast empire. But still common man had little use of it since the cost of such service was beyond his reach during that time.

After the fall of Maughals, Lord Clive had first organized a regular postal system on 24th March 1766 and the Zamindar or Land lords were asked to supply Dwak (Hindi Word for Post) runner for various routes. This was known Zamindari Dwak. But the services was restricted to Government purpose only .The said systems was re orgenised by Warren Hastings. It is worth to note here that at that time the fees for the services was required to be bare by the receiver of the Dwak. This Plan was establish first Imperial Post Office, at Calcutta GPO on 31st March 1774 and now private people were also permitted the use of the service on payment ranging from 2 annas to Rs 5/- for a letter.

The second phase of postal system was begins with the famous Scinde Dawk Issue, Sir Frere made the system of prepayment of postage and kept charges very law, i.e Half Anna per every half tola weigh letter which was to be delivered at any part of province. This was the revolutionary step in development of systems for the common man. Latter on the same module was adopted by the number of Indian Feudatory sate and developed postal stationery. The Sorath Presently “ Junaghadh” of Gujarat has most organized postal system than East India Company at that time.
